FanGraphs
There has already been a contentious issue this season about what the St. Louis Cardinals are going to do to enhance their performances on the field. Sure, the pitching and defense are above average, but the lack of offense cannot remain as it is.
Right now, the team has rolled out three integral chips from the past decade to the free-agent market. Colten Wong, Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright have all defined the last decade of Cardinals baseball. Right now, it’s not looking great, as far as resigning the trio is likely, but it could turn into a heartbeat.
For most fans, the Cardinals aren’t the same team without these three in the lineup. While you would be technically correct, that doesn’t mean the team is a worse team here without them.
Salary
Bader is on a first season worth $10.4 million, a two-year contract that pays out $4.7 million the next year.
Montgomery, who could make his Cardinals debut against the Yankees this weekend, is 22-20 with a 3.94 ERA in six big league seasons. He required Tommy John surgery from May 2018 to September 2019 due to an elbow injury.
“I still don’t think I’ve ever performed like I should have done here,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery has a salary of $6 million and is eligible for arbitration next winter. Both Bader and Montgomery are eligible for free agency after the 2023 season.
