McLaughlin’s latest world record time would be seventh in the women’s 400m flat in Eugene, whose final also took place on Friday night. And it looks like the incident could be McLaughlin’s next move.

“Me and (Coach Bobby Kersey) are going to go back after the season, decide if (the 400m hurdles) is still an event I want to do, or if we’re going to find something else because I think We have accomplished a lot in it,” McLaughlin said. “It could be (flat 400m). Anything is possible.”

With a time of 50.68 seconds – her previous record was 51.14 – McLaughlin went far ahead of Netherlands silver medalist Femke Boll (52.27) and fellow American Delilah Muhammad (53.13). The victory earned McLaughlin his first World Championships gold medal in the 400 meters hurdles.

The 22-year-old was well ahead of the field before the turn and left her world-class rivals to cross the line in 50.68 seconds.

The incredible timing cut almost a full second from his previous mark of 51.41, set at last year’s Tokyo Olympics.

Femke Boll of the Netherlands took the silver with a time of 52.27s and Delilah Muhammad of America took the bronze with a time of 53.13s.

Bol and Muhammad are the second and third fastest women ever in the 400m hurdles, but McLaughlin completely outclassed her closest rivals as she finished more than 20m from them.

“This is utterly staggering,” declared the commenter.

“Take some time to taste it. We are witnessing a once in generation athlete performing at the peak of their power.
