Uvalde
Jackson said he feels a personal connection to the city he has passed through several times. Uvalde has been a regular stop for a bite to eat or groceries before a long drive west to visit a friend’s farm on a hunting trip.
When news of the shooting at Rob’s Elementary broke on May 24, he was touched by the experience of Uvalde’s Main Street, the lush town square and the people he met at the stops. Law enforcement was heavily criticized for taking more than an hour to enter the classroom where the 18-year-old gunman attacked, and a Texas House investigation report placed the blame on the school district, saying a loose Safety culture, spotty warning systems and unlocked doors also contributed.
Three days later, Jackson and a close friend flew to Uvalde, briefly met with Governor Greg Abbott and presented a check for $170,000 with an offer to pay for all funeral expenses.
