Robinson José Canó Mercedes is a Dominican-American professional baseball second baseman for the Atlanta Braves organization. He has previously played in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres.

A native of San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, Canó signed with the Yankees organization as an amateur free agent in 2001. He played for the Yankees from 2005 to 2013, winning a World Series championship in 2009.
In December 2013, Canó signed a 10-year, USD$240 million contract with the Mariners and he played for them from 2014 to 2018, when he was traded to the Mets. Cano recorded 1,695 hits in the 2010s, the most of any major league player during that decade.

Given that the Mets originally released Canó back in May, they’ll continue to pay the overwhelming majority of his salary, so we can expect the dollar amount changing hands here is relatively low.

In 2021, he was suspended all year after failing his second career PED test. In 12 games with the Mets this season, he hit .195/.233/.268, leading to his release on May 8.

The Padres signed him five days later, but after just 12 games — during which he went 3-for-33 with 10 strikeouts — he was designated for assignment.
Cano opted to pursue free agency instead of accepting an assignment to the minors, but he went unsigned and ended up with El Paso, the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate.
