Trade package
It’s easy to know which 2022 NBA Trade Deadline deal deserves first place here, but it’s not so easy to label winners and losers in the blockbuster move that saw James Harden and Paul Milsap move to Ben Simmons, Seth Curry, Andre Sent in Philadelphia 76ers. Drummond and a pair of first round.
There’s a lot to unpack, and we’re going to find out about it all.
After that, we’ll take the rest of the action on the day of the deadline, allocating winners and losers in the wake of the tornado.
Trade winners
It’s a close call, as the Sixers are getting the best player in the deal, assuming Harden is satisfied and performs more like a Houston Rockets version of himself. But in the end, the Nets are the big winners here for a few reasons.
First, Brooklyn dropped a player at Harden, who, from pre-deadline reports, indicated he was unhappy. Whether his declining performance was tied to his attitude or age/injury (or both), it didn’t look like he would regain his old look in Brooklyn.
In return, the reeling nets get Simmons, a top-notch, versatile defender who delivers value in all areas that Harden couldn’t. Simmons can defend the opposition’s most dangerous scorer regardless of position. He’ll carry the momentum, rock the cliff and make more sense as a gap-filler in support of two front-line scorers in Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving (assuming he returns to the floor this season) .
Maybe he’s overpaid if he’s going to play her role, but the Nets also have three more guaranteed seasons of security on Simmons’ deal after that. If things don’t work out, we’ve got a taste of Simmons’ business value. Even after sitting out for most of the season, he was still worth a lot.
Curry is not a throw-in. He and Patty Mills will give Brooklyn two dead-eye shooters to make room for Brooklyn’s Superstars. Drummond is an inexpensive depth piece in case you need it.
Is injured
The 76ers point guard lacks the explosiveness he displayed when flying past defenders with the Houston Rockets. It’s the result of a left hamstring tightness that sidelined Harden for most of February.
“He’s still not there,” coach Doc Rivers said before Friday’s shooting at UCLA. “But his mph has gone up. He … almost to the level of Houston at his mph. He has reached his top speed he hasn’t reached in two years.
“He’s still a work in progress. But [in] three weeks, we really feel at that point, he’ll be 100% there.”
