Pancreatic cancer

Deer played a major role for the Hawks in their 1991 grand final victory over the West Coast at Waverly, winning the North Smith Medal.

He appeared in 123 matches for the club over a period of nine years after debuting in 1987.

Dear was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2020.

The Hawks issued a statement on Saturday recalling Dear’s effort in the 1991 Grand Final.

“Arguably his biggest moment in gray and gold came on the grand finale of 1991, helping to pull the Hawks into premiere glory,” the statement read.

“Faced short in the first break, Paul driven for a surprise turnaround, collecting 26 disposals and scoring two goals in a Norm Smith medal-winning performance.”

Dear is survived by his wife Cheri and their four children.

Hawthorne is mourning the death of 1991 Norm Smith Medalist Paul Deere at the age of 55.

Dear had been battling pancreatic cancer since being diagnosed in September 2020, and died overnight.

Considered his Premiership teammate and friend, James Morrissey summed up the feelings of many with the simplest of words.

“We’re really going to miss him,” Morrissey said.

“It’s really sad, but in a way it’s also uplifting because of what [the family] did, how they approached [the diagnosis] and supported the cause by helping others. It’s one thing to do.” It’s a very daring effort.”

She revealed, ‘It is with a very heavy heart that I share with you that my dear Paul said goodbye to us at 6.59 pm.’

‘Wednesday night we got into his favorite old car, which represented him so well and what we didn’t know was his last sunset at one of our favorite places. As was often his way, he sat calmly and quietly and took everything.

‘On Thursday he spent the whole day sitting outside, enjoying the blue skies and the warm sunshine of Melbourne winter.
