A WNBA star has been detained in Moscow after the Russian Federal Customs Service reportedly found a cannabis-containing vape cartridge in his luggage sometime last month. He could face up to 10 years in prison.
On Saturday, Russian Customs released video of Brittany Griner, an all-star forward for the Phoenix Mercury basketball team, being stopped at Sheremetyevo International Airport. The 50-second edited video shows the 31-year-old athlete, who won the U.S. Championships in the 2016 and 2021 Olympics. Footage then cuts to Griner placing her luggage on the conveyor belt of an airport scanner, after which a Russian officer pulls a package from her luggage, analyzes it, and places it in a secure bag.
Arrested
According to the customs service, Griner was arriving at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow on a flight from New York when a police dog informed the authorities of his baggage. Griner’s bags are being checked in the video released. His belongings were X-rayed, where wipe cartridges purportedly containing narcotic cannabis oil were discovered. Griner has been in Russian police custody since his arrest.
