Injury
Baker Mayfield’s shoulder continues to do the talking in Cleveland this year. The controversial quarterback injured his non-throwing shoulder early in the season and was forced to wear the odd-looking harness for the rest of the year.
For the most part, the Cleveland Browns find ways to take Mayfield out from under center every week. He missed only two starts between weeks 1 and 17.
Trade to saints
For the record, no trades have been completed. Mayfield isn’t a deal for the Carolina Panthers, and there’s a fair chance Sam Darnold will turn disgruntled, starting quarterback, for Carolina in 2022.
Make no mistake, NOLA enjoys the opportunity to play against Darnold twice a year, but the team will have no problem facing Mayfield.
Rumors about Mayfield’s potential trade continue to swirl this season as Carolina reportedly seeks to strike a deal with “urgency.” No other team has shown interest in acquiring Mayfield at the time of this writing.
Saints trade
The New Orleans Saints and the Philadelphia Eagles Had a Blockbuster Trade That Could Inadvertently Help End the Baker Mayfield Era in Cleveland
Earlier this week, the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles made a big trade ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft. While the Cleveland Browns and Baker Mayfield had nothing to do with the move, it may have been a major factor in the end of the relationship between the two sides.
Cleveland has wanted to move on from Mayfield ever since they fielded Deshan Watson, but teams have been reluctant to forgo any capital for the former No. 1 pick – partly because of his guaranteed salary of around $19 million . Brown has been patient and is hoping some team with some early experience may be desperate enough to make the move to quarterback.
Contract
At this point, we’re (relatively?) certain Baker won’t be playing another game for the Mayfield Browns. Unfortunately, it looks like the club has thrown itself into an impasse as it tries to get him off the roster.
One of the biggest barriers to potential business appears to be Mayfield’s fully guaranteed $18.86 million salary in 2022. Cleveland is reportedly willing to take half of that number, while the happening suitors want them to pay about 3/4 of it.
