Mother

Leylah Fernandez: Mother| Parents| Prediction

Fernandez comes from a very unique background. Her father is Ecuadorian, and her mother is of Filipino descent. Growing up, as Leyla herself said, her family had to do a lot for her to play. As a result, her mother also had to move to California for a few years to support the family. Since the Canadian was very young at that time, it was difficult for her not to see her mother everyday. But all these challenges have finally paid off, as she is now rapidly climbing the ladder on the circuit.

Parents

Leyla was born on 6 September 2002 in Montreal, Canada, to George and Irene Fernandez. Jorge was born in Ecuador but moved with his family to Canada at the age of 4. He later became a professional footballer representing Ecuador in international matches. Her mother Irene comes from a Philippine family but was born and raised in Canada.

George became Leyla’s first tennis coach and continues to coach him to this day. He began taking notes from other players’ coaches to coach a young Leyla during his early years. He did not travel with Leyla for the 2021 US Open, but kept in touch with her throughout the tournament, as confirmed by the father-daughter duo.

Prediction

It has been another stellar run at the French Open for Martina Trevison. Can the in-form Italian take it a step further than 2020? It’s not out of the question, but it doesn’t look like a possible outcome. Leylah Fernandez’s attempts to reach the US Open final were won over by Emma Radukanu, but the Canadian is clearly an outstanding player and has enormous match experience, especially for such a young player.

It would be a serious understatement to say that Trevison got an easy draw in the quarterfinals, with the Italian’s toughest opponents going to be either Aliksandra Sasnovich or Daria Saville. Fernandez has had a rough road, which was thoroughly tested by Belinda Bencic and Amanda Anisimova in their last two matches, both pushed into three sets. Fernandez is above any of Trevison’s previous opponents here and after the Canadian’s last two victories I struggled to watch him lose to the likes of Trevison.
