In the second round of the NCAA tournament, following a 71-58 loss to No. 8 Loyola Chicago, the Illini seniors’ final college game and program’s best player will not be missed.
In one season, they all call their “final dance”, with Ayo Dosumu and his Illinois senior teammates showing off their careers fearlessly.

But as we continue to watch the Illini roll through the competition, I continue to feel that André Curbelo can present the bright future of all Illinois players on the court.
Curbelo has been a big help for ATR this season for Orange and Blue. In just 30 games of college basketball experience, the talented guard has an ATR of 1.61. Not bad considering that there are some games where he was picking up the ball at a very high rate.
Coming off the bench, Courbelo has been a huge asset to the Illinois basketball program. He has played his part with the team this season, and next year he will take over as a full-time No. 1 guard after Io Dosanmu leaves. But there is still some work to be done as a true freshman.
On Friday, Illinois crashed out of the first round of the NCAA tournament. All played brilliantly, but a big reason the Illini were able to hold on to the No. 1 seed position was because Curbelo was taking his game to another level. He has been amazing to Orange and Blue, and I can’t wait to see what he has in the rest of us.
Recruiting
Bass is a 6-foot-5, 185-pound shooting guard from Hamilton Heights Christian Academy and lives in Chatanogo, Tennessee. He is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 217 player in the 2022 category. He is the No. 34 shooting guard in the country and the No. 7 player coming out of the state of Tennessee.
Illinois now has its first commitment for 2022. Bass gives the Illini a 20th-ranked recruiting class, which I’m sure will change in the coming months. Illinois is likely to add a lot more talent to the mix. But it is a great start that could be a special category for Orange and Blue.
Bass’s distance, his energy, and his ability to shoot with bounce, all of this reminds me a lot of Trent Frazier. Being southeastern may also have something to do with the comparison.
It’s great Illinois is going to have a player similar to Frazier in 2022. We are losing so much talent over the next two years, so Bass will have a chance to come in from day one and make an impact. I don’t see him as an immediate starter, but after two years, there is a chance that he is our starting No. 3 guard.
