Brunson makes his 18th walk to the octagon and attempts to halt the rise of another fast-rising contender. In his previous performance, he did just that by outworking young phenom Edmen Shahbazyan en route to a third-round TKO this past August. That extended his current winning streak to three fights, which followed a two-bout skid – including a quick loss to current champ Israel Adesanya – that again delayed his dreams of getting a shot at the belt.

On a hot streak leading into the fight is Kevin Holland, who had an extremely impressive 2020 with a five-fight winning streak. In his previous performance, he delivered a “Knockout of the Year” contender by stopping Ronaldo Souza via knockout in less than two minutes. With a win, Holland breaks through the pack at 185 pounds and sets himself up for a title shot along with breaking the record for octagon wins in a calendar year.
Main Event:
Holland looks for a front kick that doesn’t connect. Couple of leg kicks from Brunson. Straight left from Brunson. Holland with a jab. Body kick from Brunson. Brunson clinches. Brunson is cut. He lands some knees inside. Hollland gets a takedown! That was out of nowhere. Three minutes to go.
Brunson closes his guard and tries to lock him down. Kevin Holland with some body punches. Holland tries to posture up, and picks him up and slams him down again. The ref warns them for inactivity. Body shots from Holland. Now some big rights but Brunson pushes him off and gets up. Brunson immediately shoots and gets his own takedown. Holland’s head is against the cage. 30 seconds to go. Holland is still talking and laughing. Brunson backs out and lets him stand for the last 10 seconds. Holland just walks away from him. Brunson throws a head kick. 10-9 Holland but 49-46 Brunson.
Knockout:
In his last outing, Kevin Holland faced off against long-time veteran, Ronaldo Souza, at UFC 256 in Dec. 2020. After getting taken down early by “Jacare,” Holland showed his cool by refusing to panic when having one of the best submissions specialists in the history of the sport on top of him. Instead, Holland landed some vicious elbows from the bottom.
After fighting his way back up, Kevin Holland eventually got taken down again. But just like the first time, Holland wasn’t fazed one bit. Instead, “Trail Blazer” landed a hard right hand from his back that dazed Souza, forcing him to retreat a little. Once Holland realized he was hurt, he unloaded a few more bombs from his back. He eventually made his way up to his feet and dropped some heavy leather on a folded “Jacare” to put an end to the fight.
