Will make the cut

Tiger Woods: Will make the cut| Tee time tomorrow| Score

Since 94 players started the 2022 Masters, the cut is slightly less than a percentage point compared to your weekly PGA Tour event. Following the rule changes made ahead of the 2020 Masters, fewer 50 players will play a more tie weekend.

From 1962 to 2019, any player within 10 shots of the leader would be allowed in weekend play. That rule is no more.

Will Tiger Woods make the cut?
It is quite possible that Woods makes the cut given how well he played yesterday, as well as his comfort with the course. It looks like his injuries will have to become an issue, or some sort of scoring meltdown, to keep him from not playing on Saturday and Sunday in his quest for his sixth win at Augusta National.

The 46-year-old veteran has been linked with Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth. The trio begins play on the last nine and begins Thursday’s first round at No. 10 at 9:11 a.m. ET and No. 1 at 2:36 p.m. ET. In the second round on Friday.

McIlroy has won four Majors, and he became only the third golfer to do so by 25 (Woods, Jack Nicklaus). He has won two PGA Championships, but hasn’t won a Major since 2014.

Spieth, who replaced McIlroy as the world’s top player in the middle of the last decade, is looking for his fourth major win and his first since 2017. The PGA Championship is the only major he hasn’t won. The 28-year-old is vying to become the third youngest golfer to complete a career Grand Slam (Woods, Nicklaus).

Woods is aiming for his 83rd PGA Tour title, which will break his tie with Sam Snead. He finished 47th at the Masters in April.

Score

Tiger Woods returned to the site of his previous PGA Championship win on Thursday and neared his day with mixed results, which puts him at potential risk of a cut over the weekend. Woods, who won here in Southern Hills in 2007, made a strong start in his opening round and bogeyed his last two to finish with 4 over 74 before reaching the finish line.

Given that he was nine shots behind clubhouse leader Rory McIlroy at the end of his round, Tiger will have to push hard on Friday to avoid going home early.

Woods opened his round on par-4 10th with a birdie – just as he had started in 2007 after winning Southern Hills – after a blistering drive from the tee that left him a nail in the hole. He then affixed his approach to the tap-in birdie within a few feet to establish a rapid pace.
