Energy
Game 1 of the second round between the Colorado Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights should be Electric. When the top two clubs in the NHL meet in their best-of-seven sets, the same is expected to happen both on the ice and in the stands.
The AVS will host 10,500 fans this evening as they open the series, their largest home crowd in the entire season. Dating back to the regular season, Colorado has won 11 straight outings from Chopper Circle to its friendly confines.
“I’m really worried, seven-and-a-half [thousand] felt like 15 [thousand], so what’s 10 [thousand] going to feel like? It’s been amazing,” said avalanche forward Pierre-एडdouard Bellemare. “During the bubble not being a fan after a long quarantine, you were fine with it because it was the playoffs… When the fans show up, you’re like ‘Okay, I never want to play without them again.’ It’s the sport, it’s the sport that I love, [fans make] everything so much better.”
The in-arena environment has been a story in the first round at this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs in the United States and made the competitions feel a bit more like a typical postseason. The T-Mobile Arena is expected to be at full capacity for Game 3 of the series on Friday in Vegas, which will also be a welcome sight for Colorado.
According to head coach Jared Bednar, the club can derive as much energy from having the villains in the visiting building as they do as the home team in their own barn.
Game last night
When avalanche skating and upping your pace game, it can be mesmerizing, hypnotizing, demoralizing for the opposition.
A similar situation prevailed for the Blues in the second round on Tuesday at the Ball Arena. The Blues couldn’t put up a roadblock. There were no on-ice officers to catch the avalanche in a speed trap.
It was an impressive performance unless you were the blues.
But somehow, the Blues survived that storm. He leveled the score on a Jordan Kyrou power play goal with 3:14 to play and forced overtime despite leading 41-25 in regulation.
“Yeah, there we are,” said coach Craig Berub. “You’re one shot away in the OT. I mean, that’s the bottom line. (Brandon Saad) is almost on a breakaway, and that could have been the difference. That’s it, we’ll regroup and Game 2 will be ready for.”

The majority of an NHL first-round playoff series is a complete toss-up right now. Six of the eight series are currently tied at 2-2. The Penguins took a 3-1 advantage in that series after beating Rangers 7-2 last night. And then there are the avalanches. They beat the Predators last night to complete a four-game sweep.
And it’s not like AVs just got yelled at by preds. They blew them away, looking like they were head and shoulders above the rest of the NHL. Colorado defeated Nashville 21–9 in four games.
The Avs made such quick work of Nashville, it’s no surprise. Colorado was the best team in the Western Conference this year with a 56-19-7 record, combining elite offense with top defense. The Avs were in the top 10 in both goals scored and goals allowed, and they retained it in the playoffs. Their post-season 21 goals are more than any other team through four games, and their allowed nine goals are the third-best of 16 teams in the field. (The low-scoring Flames-Stars series allowed both teams to score seven goals.)
