Video game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has revealed that its football title will drop the FIFA name after the next installment, after an agreement between it and the game’s governing body expired.
According to reports, months of tense talks between EA and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) ended without an agreement to extend a partnership.
EA said its license deals remain in place with 19,000 players, 700 teams and more than 30 leagues around the world.
Its deal with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) also remains in place, so the Champions League will continue to be part of the sport’s offerings, even if the World Cup does not feature.
EA indicated months ago that the relationship would be over. The company’s current contract was due to expire after the Qatar World Cup, the football body sought increased revenue, and EA insisted on expanding the FIFA brand into new areas such as non-fungible tokens and real sports highlights.
A Reuters report said FIFA was seeking at least double the $150m (£121m) it receives from its biggest commercial partner, EA Sports, annually.
Both sides have agreed to continue their partnership until next summer’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

I’ve been thinking for a long time how I want to do it, when I want to do it. I know now is the time. I am ready to be myself, independent and confident of it all.
I can’t really date this, but I was probably five or six years old when I knew I was gay. So it’s been a long time that I’ve lived with a lie.
At that age you don’t really think that football and being gay don’t match. Just think, one day, when I grow up, I’ll get a girlfriend and I’ll change and it’ll be all right.
But as you get older, you realize that you just can’t change. It does not work that way.
