Goalie eye injury
Coach Jared Bednar said Monday that Avalanche goalkeeper Darcy Kumper is out for Game 4 after being knocked out of Colorado’s Game 3 win against the Nashville Predators on Saturday. However, it is not expected to be a long-term injury, and Kuiper has no injuries, a source confirmed to The Athletic.
Kumper is doing well but the eye is still swollen, Bednar said.
Kumper went down in the first period on Saturday after being hit in the face with a stick from Predators forward Ryan Johansson. The avalanche goalkeeper’s helmet came off due to contact and he fell on the ice holding his head. As he climbed out of the snow, Kumper was still holding his face and eye.
Backup goalkeeper Pavel Françoise replaced Kuemper and would start in Game 4. Justus Anunen will take the backup of Francoise.
During this year’s playoffs, Kuemper is 2-0 on average with 1.40 goals and a .941 save percentage. In the regular season, he went 37-12-4 with a 2.54 GAA and .921 SV%.
The Avalanche lead 3-0 in their first-round series against the Predators after Saturday’s 7-3 win. Game 4 is on Monday at 9:30 p.m. ET gives the avalanche a chance to sweep the hunters and advance to the second round.
Goalie injury
Hockey was halted when Nashville Predators center Ryan Johansson saw Colorado Avalanche goalkeeper Darcy Kuemper fall on the ice Saturday afternoon.
With only less than a minute left for the Avalanche in a 7–3 victory in Game 3 of the first-round playoff series, Johansson’s stick was somehow pushed into an opening in Kuiper’s mask as the former hit Nathan’s. fought for the position together. McKinnon.
Kumper began to skate toward the bench before falling. He did not return, but was at Bridgestone Arena on Sunday, the day before his team was to go for the Predators’ sweep, going 3-0 down in a playoff series for the first time in franchise history.
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said on Sunday that Kuiper’s eye was fine and he could play on Monday if the swelling subsides, although Kumper was not on the ice with the rest of the team.
“Getted real sick to my stomach, just looking back and seeing him skating on the bench and falling again,” Johansson said. “It’s not a good feeling. I hope everyone knows there’s no intention for something like this to happen. Just a weird accident.”
“Definitely put a smile on my face hearing that it might be a little scratchy with some swelling.”
This wasn’t the first time a stick was found inside Kumper’s mask. One such drama happened in 2019 when he was with the Arizona Coyotes.
Johansson said she had no idea at first that her stick had hurt. He soon realized it, however, as he stood along the boards and saw a replay.
“Once I skated, I was like, ‘Wow, I think that was my stick. Oh, crap,'” Johansson said.
