Suspended
The Arizona Cardinals didn’t have DeAndre Hopkins on the field for their final four games of the 2021 season, and now, it looks like they won’t even have them on the field to start the 2022 season.
The NFL announced Monday that the Cardinals star receiver has been suspended six games for violating the NFL’s policy on the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The suspension means Hopkins will be out by mid-October. The ban would keep him off the field for at least 7 weeks and could keep him out until week 8 if the cards were given a bye during the first six weeks of the season.
Hopkins reacted to the suspension on Monday night, tweeting that he was “confused and shocked” by his positive test.
“In my 10-year career, I have never tested positive for using performance enhancing drugs,” Hopkins wrote on Twitter. “I was confused and stunned to learn that my November test came back with trace elements of a banned substance. I am very careful about what I put in my body and always take a holistic approach, That’s why I’m working with my team. Investigate how this could have happened. But as careful as I was, clearly I wasn’t careful enough. For that, I would like to call on Cardinals fans, my teammates and the entire Cardinals organization I’m sorry. I never want to let my team down.”
What did test positive for
Former Clemson star and Arizona Cardinals receiver DeAndre Hopkins has been suspended by the NFL six games on Monday for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
“DeAndre Hopkins of the Arizona Cardinals has been suspended without pay for the first six games of the 2022 regular season for violating NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances,” an NFL spokesman said in an official statement. “Hopkins is eligible to participate in all preseason drills and games. He will be allowed to return to the Cardinals’ active roster after the team’s sixth regular season game.”
The NFL said Hopkins tested positive for a “prohibited substance plus a diuretic or masking agent/attempt to alter, dilute, or adulterate a sample/attempt to manipulate the result of a test”.
Hopkins is allowed to work with the team, but cannot play regular season games until mid-October. Hopkins, who had 42 receptions for 572 yards and eight touchdowns last season, missed seven games due to injuries, including a knee problem that required surgery.
