James Madison softball standout Lauren Burnett has died, the university announced Tuesday. The school did not provide details about the cause or circumstances of the 20-year-old’s death.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of one of our student-athletes,” JMU President Jonathan Algar and athletic director Jeff Bourne said in a joint statement.
He noted that Burnett, a sophomore catcher, was a key member of the Dukes’ impossible run at the Women’s College World Series last year. JMU became the first unseeded event in the history of the tournament to reach the semi-finals.
