Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo[a] (born Adetokunbo;[b] December 6, 1994)[2] is a Greek professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Antetokounmpo’s nationality, in addition to his size, speed, strength and ball-handling skills, has earned him the nickname “Greek Freak”.

Charles and Veronica Adetokunbo moved from Lagos to Greece in 1991, hoping for a better future for themselves and their family after struggling to find employment. Adetokunbos’ eldest son, Francis, was left behind in Lagos to be raised by his grandparents. According to The New York Times, Charles Adetokunbo worked as a handyman and wife Veronica worked as a baby sitter in his struggle for his family, the only black in the area. Adetokunbos had four more sons, all born in Greece, including Giannis on December 6, 1994. (Anteokunampo became Giannis’ surname, as it was written as such instead of Adetokunbo’s birth name on his Greek passport.)

One of basketball’s most decorated players, [4] Antetokounmpo won back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player awards in 2019 and 2020, alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James as the only player in NBA history who won two MVPs before the age of 26. Along with his MVP award, he was also named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, becoming the third player after Michael Jordan (1988) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1994) to win both awards in the same season. In 2021, Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to their first NBA championship since 1971 and was named Finals MVP. [5] That same year, he was selected to the NBA’s 75th anniversary team.
