Evgeny Vladimirovich Malkin (born 31 July 1986) is a Russian professional ice hockey center and alternate captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins. , Nicknamed “Geno”, Malkin began his career with his hometown club Metallurg Magnitogorsk, playing for their junior and senior teams. He was then selected second overall in the 2004 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, although an international transfer dispute delayed the start of his NHL career until 2006. Penguins forward Evgeny Malkin was suspended four games by the NHL Department of Player Safety for a cross-check on Predators defenseman Matt Borovicki.
At the end of the second period on Sunday, a scuffle broke out between Malkin and Borovicki. The two pushed each other, before Malkin cut the stick out of Borovicki’s hands and then cross-checked his face. As a result he was rated a double minor for high-sticking.
This is the second time in his career that Malkin has been suspended. The suspension will also cost him $190,000 which will go to the Players Emergency Assistance Fund.
Malkin has skated in 37 games for Pittsburgh, recording 17 goals and 20 assists.
Pittsburgh won the competition 3–2 in overtime.

The Department of NHL Player Protection announced today that they have scheduled a hearing with Evgeny Malkin tonight.
Malkin has been suspended once again in his 977 game career after he was given a one game leeway in February 2019 for a high-sticking incident with then-Philadelphia Flyers forward Michael Raffle.
Yesterday’s incident with Nashville’s Mark Borovicki was somewhat similar to the case of Raffle, in which an opponent mocked Malkin, and the forward retaliated by slamming his stick into the opposition’s face. This happened after the conclusion of the second period in yesterday’s game.
Malkin was given a four-minute double-minor penalty during the game, officials did a video review of the incident, but did not convert it into a major penalty on ice. Borovicki was also penalized for a two-minute deduction, but left the bloody and did not return to play in the third period or overtime.
Given that his previous suspension came two years earlier, Malkin is not considered a “repeat offender” by the league for the purposes of salary that will be forfeited. However, this does not mean that their history will not be considered for possible suspension, as the league also states:

Malkin will miss upcoming games against the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins after the NHL player security department announced the suspension on Monday following a disciplinary hearing. In a video explaining the suspension, the league called Malkin’s cross-checks “retaliatory and offensive”.
Malkin was initially given a double-minor penalty of only four minutes after hitting Borovicki in the mouth with his stick at the end of Sunday’s second period.
“It’s an emotional game,” coach Mike Sullivan told reporters after the game. “It’s physical, and sometimes it happens. It was a physical sport, especially on the net fronts in the areas where it happened.
“Obviously we don’t want our best players in the penalty box, but these guys are competitive people and they back out. We’d love to have them on the ice. They give us a better chance than when they’re on the ice.” But one of the things we love about Jinno is how competitive he is, and so when you get to an emotional game like today’s game, those things happen.”
This is Malkin’s second suspension after a one-game ban for high-sticking in 2019. He has been fined three times. This suspension cost him $190,000 in salary.

The NHL’s Player Safety Department announced supplemental disciplinary action Monday night after an evening hearing with Malkin.
The Penguins are 42-22-10 and have 94 points, good for third place in the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals are behind Pittsburgh in the division with 90 points and two games in hand.
The 35-year-old Malkin has 37 points from 37 matches this season and did not make his 2021-22 debut until January 11 due to a knee injury.
