Typically, he said, he’d shoot with a camera set highly specialized specifically for the type of photos that coveted the body issue. And there was some concern about getting a picture high enough resolution for the large format used by ESPN magazine. But with years of experience on larger, more complex shoots, Coulter finally decided that using a more basic piece of equipment would be an exciting challenge. After a successful test shoot that helped him explore the capabilities of the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera, he felt pretty confident about the whole thing.

Although it was not the equivalent of taking a few vacation pictures like a typical iPhone camera user. The shoot was done in Coolidge, Arizona and required some advanced equipment to make it work.

“We thought we needed a lot of light and that was actually confirmed when we had a lot of light in the image on set, which really helped – so if we could keep the pace of the film as low as possible , so that would give us the highest resolution image – with the least digital noise in the image – and the best look when printed on a page. So it was one thing when we were shooting JV that we really made a point of,” Coulter said.

JV Baez’s experience got off to a dramatic start on Opening Day, following the latest Tiger walk from the White Sox with a base hit to the right-field wall, sweeping Austin Meadows to the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday.

The play was initially called out, but a video review clearly showed the ball bouncing off the wall, before right fielder AJ Pollock bobbed it, then caught it. The Tigers stormed the field, while home plate umpire Marvin Hudson announced: The call was overturned.

“I knew it hit the wall,” said an enthusiastic Badge after the 5-4 win. “I thought it hit the glove and then the wall and then he caught it. But it was backwards. It hit the wall then his glove caught it.”

Pollock was playing his first career game at Comerica Park after being acquired by the White Sox in a trade last week.

“I was too tight on the wall there,” Pollock said. “I felt it hit my glove, but I didn’t know if it hit the glove or hit the wall. The ball got out there and I caught it. I didn’t know what to think about it. It was kind of a funky game.”

The walk-off victory marked a wild end that gave the White Sox an eighth and ninth inning lead close to Liam Hendrix. Future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera scored in eighth place with his 2,988th career hit, a two-run single off Hendricks.

Andrew Vaughan gave the White Sox the lead again with a home run in the ninth, a two-out triple by Meadows set the stage for Baez at the bottom of the innings. Manager AJ Hinch spent a moment with Badge before the game winner.

“You can beat him with a single in that position,” Hinch said. “It’s just trying to calm down the moment so that you are in control of the moment.”

Home run

The Arlington Country Day graduate scored two home runs on Thursday — his third in as many games — as the Chicago Cubs beat Colorado 6-2.

Baez became the first Major League Baseball player since St. Louis Joe Cunningham in 1954 to score three home runs in his first three games.

“I’m not panicked,” Baez told the Chicago Tribune. “I’m taking the game slow and thinking about the state of the game.”

Badge, who was drafted ninth overall in 2011, has been in tears since being promoted to the majors from Triple A Iowa on Monday. Badge’s first major league hit was a home run at the top of the 12th inning on Tuesday to beat Colorado.

Nickname

Javier Baez certainly lived up to his “El Mago” nickname in Wednesday night’s game against the Marlins, avoiding a tag at home plate with a brilliant swim move.

“El Mago,” Spanish for “the magician,” is an apt moniker for a player like Baez, who has dazzled with his theatrics on diamonds throughout his major league career.
