EZ’s dramatic walk-off hit gives Detroit Tigers 5-4 win over Chicago White Sox on Opening Day

JV Baez’s experience got off to a dramatic start on Opening Day when the latest Tiger went off the White Sox, hitting a base right-field wall, propelling Austin Meadows with a winning run at the bottom of the ninth inning. . on Friday.

The play was initially called out, but a video review clearly showed the ball bouncing off the wall, before right fielder AJ Pollock bobbed it, then caught it. The Tigers stormed the field, while home plate umpire Marvin Hudson announced: The call was overturned.

“I knew it hit the wall,” said an enthusiastic Badge after the 5-4 win. “I thought it hit the glove and then the wall and then he caught it. But it was backwards. It hit the wall then his glove caught it.”

Pollock was playing his first career game at Comerica Park after being acquired by the White Sox in a trade last week.

“I was too tight on the wall there,” Pollock said. “I felt it hit my glove, but I didn’t know if it hit the glove or hit the wall. The ball got out there and I caught it. I didn’t know what to think about it. It was kind of a funky game.”

The walk-off victory marked a wild end that gave the White Sox an eighth and ninth inning lead close to Liam Hendrix. Future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera scored in eighth place with his 2,988th career hit, a two-run single off Hendricks.

The Tigers were upset that Jammer Candelario was called in to intervene on what they believe was a legal slide into second base earlier in the game. Slide took a run off the board.

Maybe it was the talk of the evening of the baseball gods. Sure, Baez’s hit jumped off the wall pretty clearly, but two calls of that magnitude going against Detroit would have been an offense against the game.

Tigers fans, you are going to love this guy.
