Opening day lineup
Atlanta – For just the third time since 1890, the Cincinnati Reds will open a season on the road.
His three-match series was rained out in 1966, leading to the start of the season in Philadelphia. A 32-day lockout pushed back the start of the 1990 season when the Reds opened in Houston. And now, the 99-day lockdown means the Reds will face Atlanta at 8 p.m. Thursday at Truist Park (ESPN2, 700-WLW).
It’s not going to be an easy schedule for the Reds as they face the defending World Series champions. Tyler Mahle will start his first opening day opposite Atlanta lefty Max Fried, who played six shutout innings in Game 6 of the World Series to claim the title.

Catchers (2): Tyler Stephenson and Aramis Garcia.
Infielders (6): Joy Votto, Jonathan India, Kyle Farmer, Mike Moustakus, Brandon Drury, Colin Moran.
Outfielders (5): Tommy Pham, Nick Senzel, Tyler Nequin, Jake Fraley, and Aristides Aquino.
Starting pitchers (4): Mahle, Revere Sanmartin, Vladimir Gutierrez, and Hunter Greene.

Opening Day is all about optimism and endless possibilities in Major League Baseball. But it may be a little harder for the Cincinnati loyalists to be optimistic after an offseason that saw the Reds turn away from All-Star outfielder Jesse Winker, slugging infielder Eugenio Suarez and steady starting pitcher Sonny Grey. Voto sold out for more power last year and resulted in 36 home runs and a .563 slugging percentage. Even at 38 years old, it looks like one of the best hitters of this generation still has a lot in the tank. India are closed as the leadoff hitters after the NL Rookie of the Year campaign. The Reds will expect similar great things from their young, patient catcher Stevenson. Pham, 34, was added to fill in a hole left by Winker a few weeks ago. He’s coming out of a very cool season in San Diego. 2 overall selection in the 2016 draft may be Senzel, a late bloomer. He hasn’t impressed with parts of three MLB seasons so far.
