Tribute today
TBS aired a nearly 10-minute tribute to Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski during Saturday’s NCAA Final Four pregame show.
The format was similar to the John Madden tribute that Fox aired in December. It featured Mike Krzyzewski sitting in a chair and watching the big screen of the clip and people talking about him.
Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo was one of the people in the video. Coaches included former Duke players Carlos Boozer, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Christian Laettner, John Scherer and Zion Williamson. USA Olympic team players Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant were also involved.
Krzyzewski became emotional when his daughters and wife, Mickey, spoke at the end of the video.
“Chill out man,” Krzyzewski said about halfway through it.
Krzyzewski is retiring at the end of the 2021-22 season. He has been Duke’s head coach since 1980.
Number 2-seeded Duke enters the matchup 32-6 on aggregate. Most recently, Duke defeated Arkansas 78-69 on Saturday in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
8 seed North Carolina comes in a game of 28-9 on aggregate. On Sunday, UNC defeated St. Peter’s 69-49 in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
The winner goes on to face either Kansas or Villanova in the NCAA Tournament national championship game on Monday.
In their previous meetings this season, Duke defeated North Carolina 87–67 at Chapel Hill on February 5, and North Carolina defeated Duke 94–81 at Durham on March 5.
Stepping down
The college basketball world praised Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski on Wednesday after news broke that he would be retiring at the end of the 2021-22 season.
Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils since 1980 and will leave as the most winning men’s basketball coach in Division I history.
The announcement comes nearly two months after UNC Chapel Hill basketball coach Roy Williams retired. Williams told reporters on Wednesday that Krzyzewski was “brilliant for the game of basketball” and a “good friend.”
