Joan Joyce (August 18, 1940 – March 26, 2022) was a softball coach at Florida Atlantic, for 28 years until her death in 2022. She was previously a softball player for Rebestos Brackets and Orange Lionets.  She also set records on the LPGA Tour as a golfer and on the United States women’s national basketball team, and was a player and coach for the Connecticut Clippers volleyball team.

Boca Raton, Fla. – Florida Atlantic softball coach Joan Joyce, the only coach in the program’s 28-year history and whose many claims to fame once included Ted Williams, has died, the school announced Sunday.

Joyce died on Saturday, the school said without reason. She was 81 years old.

FAU President John Kelly said, “Joan was a true sports legend, and we are grateful for the 28 years she spent here, modeling the best in personal and professional behavior for our student-athletes.” “Joan’s legacy will live on at the university and across the country through the generations of young women she inspired to play – and excel at – softball and golf.”

Joyce was inducted into the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. She spent 19 years as a member of the LPGA Tour—only 17 putts were required for a round in 1982—and also served as the FAU’s women’s golf coach from 1996. through 2014.

But unquestionably the thing he was asked about the most in his life was the 1961 exhibition in Waterbury, Connecticut, in which he dismissed Williams, the last MLB player to score 400 runs in a season.

“No matter where I go in this world, I always have people coming to me who say, ‘You killed Ted Williams,'” Joyce said in 2009. “This happens all the time.”

The news was first announced by Florida Atlantic University Athletics, which shared the passing of the FAU head softball coach, former head women’s golf coach, and several Hall of Fame members.

FAU President John Kelly also confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, saying, “This is a very sad loss for the FAU family. Joan was a true sports legend, and we appreciate her for the 28 years she spent here. Grateful, modeling the best in personal and professional behavior for our student-athletes.

“Joanne’s legacy will live on at the university and across the country through the generations of young women she inspired to play – and excel in – softball and golf,” the statement said.

When Joyce was only 8 years old, she entered the sports world and remained there until her recent death. She was in her 28th season as head coach of the FAU and was the only coach the program is known to have. Her stint as the women’s golf coach for the Owls lasted for 18 years (1996–2014).

From 1996 to 2014, Joyce coached the Florida Atlantic University women’s golf team, and from 1977 to 1995, she was a member of the LPGA Tour. Joyce is in the 20th Hall of Fame and was a 15-time All-American. Joan was also a member of four World Series softball teams.

Joyce is also remembered for defeating two Baseball Hall of Famers, Ted Williams and Hank Aaron. At just 20 years old, Joyce killed two men in front of a crowd of 17,000 spectators.

She had been coaching at FAU for 28 years and was inducted into the Hall of Fame 20 times. Notably, she was the only coach in the history of the program that has been in existence for the past 28 years. Joyce is best known for attacking Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams.

The news of his death was announced by FAU President John Kelly on 27 March. Kelly described it as a “very sad loss to the FAU family”, adding that Joan’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of young women to play softball and golf. Kelly said Joan brought out the best student-athletes in both personal and professional dealings. Brian White, FAU’s vice president and director of athletics, called him a legend whose legacy is unmatched. White said she was one of the pillars of the FAU.

Joan had been playing since the age of eight and had an illustrious coaching career. He led the FAU to win 11 conference championships and the same number of NCAA postseason tournaments. In addition, she was also included in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Joan also served as the head coach of the FAU women’s golf team from 1996 to 2014, during which she was recognized as the Conference Coach of the Year eight times. During his 18-year stint as head coach, he set a record of 1002-674-1. He also achieved All-American recognition in several sports.
