Is Catholic:
Krzyzewski was born in Chicago, the son of Polish American parents Emily M. (née Pituch) and William Krzyzewski. Raised as a Catholic, Krzyzewski attended St. Helen Catholic School in Ukrainian Village, Chicago and, later, Archbishop Weber High School in Chicago, a Catholic prep school for boys.
Krzyzewski, or Coach K, is one of the most successful college basketball coaches of all-time. What some people do not know about him, is that he is a Polish-American, evident in his name. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to Polish-American parents on February 13, 1947.
1000 win:
Krzyzewski, who in 2015 became the first men’s coach at college basketball’s top level reach the 1,000-win mark, improved to 1,073-330 during a 43-year career that also included a half-decade at his alma mater, Army.
Leading the Blue Devils for 41 seasons, Krzyzewski has amassed an impressive 1196-365 record, holding the record for most wins as a college basketball coach.
Why does limp:
Krzyzewski felt severe groin pain, and after a trip to the doctor, learned that pain was actually caused by his hips.
Coach K, who was 51 at the time, had osteoarthritis in his hip, one of the most common joint disorders that causes chronic pain and disability. The condition is caused by aging and wear and tear on a joint.
Bones and joints are cushioned by cartilage, a firm rubbery tissue that allows bones to glide over one another. However when cartilage breaks down from aging, the bones rub together and cause pain, swelling and stiffness.
Retirement:
Krzyzewski repaid that loyalty in 2004, when the Los Angeles Lakers nearly enticed him to leave Durham for the NBA with a huge raise and a chance to coach Kobe Bryant.
In a 2020 episode of “The Old Man & the Three,” a podcast hosted by former Duke player JJ Redick, Krzyzewski explained how close he came to leaving college basketball before winning his fourth and fifth national championships.
