A source confirmed to ESPN, Jaran Reid’s defensive tackle, who refused to move money around in his contract for pay-cap purposes, led to his release by the Seattle Seahawks last week.

Reid has since signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. According to the NFL Network, this includes a $5 million guarantee and up to $7 million in total.

He was set to make around $9 million with the Seahawks in 2021.

Seattle wanted Reed to agree to what is known as a simple restructuring that would have paid him the same amount and gave the Seahawks immediate cap relief.

Reid started in all 17 games during his lone season at Kansas City, including 43 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and 12 QB hits. In three postseason games in 2021, Reid recorded 13 combined tackles, one sack and one QB hit. Reed figures to start on defensive end with Dean Lowry, with Kenny Clarke in the middle.

Reid was originally drafted out of Alabama by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In 2018, the former college football national champion recorded a career-high 10.5 sacks and 50 combined tackles. However, Reid was suspended for six matches the following season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The incident in question dates back to 2017, and as a result Reid was not charged with any crime.

Free agent defensive tackle Jaren Reid says he is heading to the Green Bay Packers.

Reid indicated his choice by tweeting on Tuesday, “Let’s be very grateful to GoPackgo for the opportunity to continue my career in Green Bay.” The Packers have yet to announce their addition.

The 29-year-old Reid must solidify a defensive line that features the playmaking to tackle Kenny Clarke, but lacks depth.

Reid played for the Kansas City Chiefs last season and made 2½ sacks and a fumble recovery. He spent his first five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, who picked him out of Alabama in the second round of the 2016 draft.
