Why was ejected

The North Carolina Tar Heels prevailed against Baylor in overtime of Saturday’s NCAA Tournament game, but a controversial caretaker decision nearly cost them.

With the Tar Heels 25 ahead and about 10 minutes remaining, North Carolina star Brady Manek was deemed a major 2 foul on replays. Manek threw an elbow while boxing, but many felt that Flagrant 2 and Ejection were too harsh in terms of play, considering Baylor’s Jeremy Sochan as the agitator.

The Tar Heels went into freefall after the ejection. Part of this seemed to come as officials began to call the game more tightly, with Baylor benefiting from more than one foul call. Baylor made a 25-point deficit and led the game to overtime, but eventually ran out of gas and lost 93–86.

Manek was heading for a big game with 26 points in 27 minutes. His absence certainly hurt the Tar Heels, but he would be ready to move to Sweet 16 when his teammates braced for him.

One of the Tar Heels’ star players, Brady Manek, was ruled out for a major-2 foul, with almost 10 minutes to go on Saturday’s No. 8 UNC vs No. 1 boiler round of 32 games.

The foul was called after Manek pushed himself under the basket into the boiler’s Jeremy Sochan.

Here Manek is seen from close quarters elbowing Sochan.

At the time, the Tar Heels were up 67–42 after the majority of the game. Manek led the team with 26 points at the time and had four three-pointers.

After Manek’s ejection, the Bears scored 9–0 to close the gap further.

Flagrant foul

North Carolina has been one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far after the 8-seed Tar Heels completely dominated 9-seed Marquette in the first round. They kept rolling on Saturday, taking a 25-point lead over the No. 1 seed boiler with 10:47 to play in the second half.

Then the tide turned as UNC’s Brady Manek was hit with a flagrant 2 foul on a box-out. Manek reaches back in the process, elbowing Baylor’s Jeremy Sochan. It looked like a normal play at second glance, but the referee went to the monitor.

Manek, who had a team-high 26 points at the time, was assessed the harshest penalty, leaving him out. Here’s the play:

Balor went on a monster race after the call, tying the game and forcing overtime. North Carolina would win 93-86 in the extra period, but not without enduring the stress of a huge meltdown/withdrawal.

Internet was burning on Flagant 2 call.
