Predictions
The 2000s and 1990s are living for this USC-Miami matchup, but it’s basketball, not football. We can let them pretend a little longer to regain their youth.
Miami finished fourth in the ACC this year, earning the No. 10 seed. This is the Hurricanes’ first tournament appearance since 2018, but it is also their lowest tournament seed since 1998 when they were the No. 11 seed.
On the flipside, we have the USC Trojans, who, despite losing to Evan Mobley in the NBA Draft, put together another solid season for the No. 7 seed in the tournament. Last year, the Mobley brothers drove the Elite 8 to USC before it fell to Gonzaga, 85-66.
These two teams are FUN with a capital F. The starting line slightly favors USC Co at -125, but it’s a matchup that’s very close to the call.
USC is led by Evan Mobley’s brother, Isaiah, who averages 14.3 points, 8.5 boards, 3.2 assists and 0.9 blocks per game. He sounds like a future NBA player, but he must return to USC for one more year in order to advance as a player.
The Hurricane is led by seniors Kameron McGusty and Charlie Moores, as well as Isaiah Wong.
Odds
They say style makes matchups, and boy, do we have two opposites here. The Miami Hurricanes are pitted against the USC Trojans.
Miami (FL) will be a unique test for the Trojans, as it hasn’t weathered a lineup like the Hurricanes. Miami’s trio and big man Sam Wardenburg will force the Trojans to defend on the periphery.
Meanwhile, USC is a team that plays through their tremendous size and length, while Isaiah wants to feed Mobley less.
Arizona is the only team to test the Trojans with shooting and tempo this season, and the Wildcats emerged victorious in both meetings.
On the other hand, you take a Miami team that proved it could handle the big men better, as it owned victories over Clemson, Duke, North Carolina, and Wake Forest.
Now, the only thing left to determine is whether each team’s performance against similar opponents will translate into this matchup.
