The Colorado Rockies have made a surprising splash in the free-agent market. According to John Heyman of MLB Network, the Rockies have agreed terms with free agent outfielder/third baseman Kris Bryant. The deal is for seven years and $182 million, says ESPN’s Jeff Passon. According to multiple reports, Bryant’s deal also includes a complete no-trade clause for the life of the contract. The deal would last for Bryant’s age-36 season.

Bryant, 30, is one of the most coveted free agents in the 2021-22 class. He spent the last season with the Cubs and Giants. Coming into the off-season, we ranked Bryant as the No. 3 available free agent. Here RJ Anderson’s writing:

What has been written about Bryant that hasn’t been written before? He is a middle-order hitter who can play in every corner (plus some center field) and who positions himself as the face of the franchise. It’s too bad that their legacy is tinged with the popularization (and, therefore, generalization) of service-time manipulation. He deserves better.

In 2021 for the Cubs and Giants, Bryant batted .265/.353/.481 (124 ops) with 25 home runs in 144 games. As for his career, Bryant has an OPS of 132 in parts of seven big-league seasons. He is a four-time All-Star and claimed NL MVP honors in 2016 as a member of the World Champion Cubs.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the average value of the deal is the same as that of St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, and is the 24th highest price in MLB history.
