Syracuse guard Buddy Boehm punches Florida State guard Wyatt Wilkes’ midsection in the first half of Wednesday’s second-round ACC tournament game.

Syracuse took a 25-17 lead when Joe Girard connected on a transition 3-pointer with 10 minutes and 17 seconds in the first half. Wilkes appeared to be boxing Boehm, but Syracuse Sr. struck Wilkes in the stomach after the ball passed through the net.

After lighting up the ACC and NCAA tournaments last March, Buddy Boehm went from nobody to anyone. The junior guard averaged 25 points in his last 7 games in 2021 and was popping up on the NBA draft board. But, after SU’s season ended in Sweet 16, Boehm and his father announced that he would return to school for his senior year.

2022 has been anything but a sweet ride for Syracuse. Orange is currently just 9-11, leading in the matchup with Wake Forest at 17-4 on Saturday. Boeheim’s raw numbers are still strong, with only 19 points per game, nearly 90% off the foul line, and about 3.5 rebounds and assists per game.

Wilkes left the game, while Boehm finished with 14 points in a 96–57 Orange victory.

“In the heat of today’s game, after a few pushes in the street, I waved my hand to get back on the court,” Boehm later said in a statement. “It was wrong to act in despair. I apologized to Wyatt Wilkes several times in the handshake line. He said don’t worry about it, but I know I was wrong. I am proud to have respect for the game and my opponent. I won’t react like that again.”
