Investigation
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday suspended Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver Calvin Ridley for allegedly betting on NFL games in the 2021 season through at least the 2022 season finale.
The NFL said in a statement that the alleged bet took place over a five-day period at the end of November 2021 while Ridley was away from the club’s facility on a list of non-football illness.
A league investigation found no evidence to show that any insider information was used or that any game was compromised in any way. The NFL also stated that there was no evidence that any of the coaches, staff, teammates or other players knew about the alleged betting.

Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to capture and better understand what is going on in the world. Are you confused as to how an NFL player got caught betting on league games? We’re here to help.
Calvin Ridley, by his own admission, bet $1,500 on an NFL parlay involving his Atlanta Falcons. The indefinite suspension as a result of those bets would have caused him to lose a salary of at least $11.1 million.
Ridley became the highest-profile NFL player to be caught betting on league games in the modern era. So how did Roger Goodell know he was betting a relatively small amount on the Falcons? Because the NFL has a system in place for this exact scenario.
The rise of legalized sports betting across the United States has led to a network of safeguards aimed at preventing insiders from using their knowledge to bet on sports. Ridley rolled out the Hard Rock sportsbook app within the state of Florida in the month alone — it has since been struck down by the state’s Supreme Court. To do this, he had to open an account with the book that linked him to his bets by Social Security number or bank account.
Once in the system, their bets were marked by a program contracted by the NFL called Genius Sports, which handled many of the logistics behind the league’s venture into legal gambling. Genius is particularly adept at protecting the integrity of sports where betting is widespread.
