Short program music
For the first time in her nine years as a senior competitor at the US Figure Skating Championships, Maria Bell follows the women’s short program.
The 25-year-old skater still got his first U.S. run in Friday’s free skate. It takes a lot of work to win the title.
2017 US Champion Karen Chen is only one point behind Bell. Two-time US champion Alyssa Liu (2019, 2020) is four points away from the lead.
But Thursday night in Nashville belonged to Radiant Bell, who presented a light, joyous program for “River Flows in You,” a piano composition by Korean composer Yiruma.
The Southern California-based skater opened with one key element that eluded her earlier this season: a neat triple flip-triple toe loop combination. He added a strong triple lutz to the second half of his program, as well as nifty spins and steps, to earn 75.55 points.
“I’ve been in every position to go on a long program, and the goal is always the same,” Bell said. “But of course, I feel like I have good confidence going free.”
Much of that confidence lies in the strong triple-triple, which scored a solid 10.33 points.
“It’s the first triple-triple I’ve had this season, so of course, it’s the best,” Bell said. “I learned from the Grand Prix, figured out what we needed to do better. … And then here, it was a matter of attack.”
One of Bell’s coaches, Adam Rippon, insisted that Bell’s skating had much more than a jumping element.
2022 winter olympics
Alyssa Liu missed out on joining an exclusive club of women’s figure skaters to land the triple axel at the Winter Olympics, but still finished as the highest-scoring of three Americans at the Beijing Games on Thursday.
Entering the long event in eighth place, Liu went for the big score by trying to become the sixth woman to land a triple axel advancing to the Olympics, but she swung her legs. She missed out on a built-in scoring bonus for putting down a triple-triple combination in just one second in the second half of her four-minute program.
But Liu, 16, led the field until the last six skaters took to the ice. Liu’s ability to leap forcefully is the United States’ best hope to compete on the world stage against the explosive prowess of Russian Olympic Committee skaters. She is already a two-time US National Champion.
Maria Bell, 25, nearly a decade older than Liu, was nearly flawless in her program, though it couldn’t compete at the top of the field with artistry and technical aptitude. The reigning national champion triumphantly landed Triple Lutz and broke away in tears of joy as she finished her only Olympics. After starting the long program in 11th place, Bell guaranteed himself a top-10 spot.
