Jared Cannonier wants his shot at gold after demolishing Derek Brunson at UFC 271.
It was a surprise performance from Cannonnier, who had to fight hard in the first round to return the latter and deliver an absolutely brutal knockout with a series of elbow strikes to the ground to eliminate Brunson in the second. As the final strike landed, the referee began to stop the contest, while simultaneously throwing Brunson’s corner in the towel to make sure he didn’t absorb any further damage.
Jared Cannonnier has cemented his place as the next UFC middleweight title challenger after defeating Derek Brunson at UFC 271 in Houston, Texas. Cannonnier recovered from a difficult first round, repeatedly hurting Brunson on his way to a brutal stop.
Brunson seized control of Round 1, thanks to a heavy investment in grappling and takedowns. Cannonier displayed impressive balance and flexibility, but Brunson’s pressure brought him into top control and opened up the striking blonde bomber. Brunson made an unexpected late knock and followed up with a crucial rear-neck choke attempt. However, the round ended, saving Cannonier from a potentially difficult escape.
