Nathan Wei Chen (Chinese: ; born May 5, 1999) is an American figure skater. He is the 2022 Olympic champion, [13] a three-time world champion (2018, 2019, 2021), the 2017 Four Continents champion, a three-time Grand Prix Final champion (2017, 2018, 2019), and a six-time US national champion. (2017–22). At the junior level, Chen is the 2015–16 Junior Grand Prix Final champion, the 2013–14 Junior Grand Prix Final bronze medalist and the 2014 World Junior bronze medalist. Chen also helped the US Olympic team win a bronze medal in the 2018 team event and a silver medal in the 2022 team event.

“I never thought I’d actually be able to do this,” Chen said. “It was a very difficult mountain.”

His coach, Rafael Arutunian, remembered Chen and his mother, Hetty Wang, driving every few months from Salt Lake City to Southern California to take lessons with him at the start of their working relationship 11 years ago. Those were lessons the family really couldn’t afford, so Arutunian would take the money that Chen’s mother paid him and give it back to her son.

“One day he told his mother, ‘If we don’t move, I won’t make it,'” Arutunian said. “That was what an 11 year old boy was saying.”

Is adopted

He may be a two-time Olympian, but to Nathan Chen’s parents, father Zhidong Chen and mother Hetty Wang, he is just their son.

Nathan, who grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, is the youngest of five children. His eldest sister, Alice Chen, works in social media for Apple News and lives in New York City. She also has her own candle company, We Are Social Club, and has worked for Reese Witherspoon’s book club and production company, Hello Sunshine. “I’m the oldest, so he’ll always be my little brother,” Ellis told Team USA.org in 2017. “It’s so incredible to see him grow into both the person and athlete he is now. He’s so strong in every aspect of the word, and I’m really proud of how far he’s come and how far he’ll go .” She added, “We have seen for the first time the blood, sweat and tears Nathan has been putting into his career for literally the rest of his life. I can hardly remember a time when he was not skating; He probably spent more time at the rink than he did at home. 

Medal ceremony

Legendary Russian coach Tatiana Tarasova denied that any skater from the Russian Olympic Committee would dope. In response to a question about the doping allegations, Tarasova said, “It can’t be true.” “We can be pointed fingers, but we are all clean.”
