BEIJING — A gold medal for American figure skater Nathan Chen, after setting a world record in the men’s short event, looks well within reach.

Chen came out on top of a talented group of skaters during the men’s singles skate short event at the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday. He and 23 of his competitors will now compete in the men’s free skate event on Thursday.

After moving to Beijing after his disastrous turn at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, Chen was facing enormous pressure. During last week’s team event, Chen hinted at what was to come.

Leading up to Chen’s performance, the top four skaters from Japan and South Korea rode their own, higher-caliber skaters around the ice – setting the bar high for the American.

United States figure skater Nathan Chen came to the short event hoping to erase memories of 2018, and he wrote an entirely new narrative as he set a world record with his score in the event.

Chen, who stumbled into the shorter program during the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, gave the world notice that he was at the top of his game during his routine, and he started it off with a spectacular quad flip

Skating to Charles Aznavour’s French classic “La Boheme,” Chen’s routine was the pice de résistance of Tuesday morning’s short program.

As part of his routine, Chen perfectly executed a quad flip, triple axle, and a quad flip-triple toe loop combination that drew judges and an American audience to see his chance at Olympic redemption. Stayed late for

“I was excited,” Chen said during the NBC broadcast. “Last Olympics, both the shorter events didn’t go the way I wanted and finally got the opportunity to skate the events the way I wanted—it feels really cool. It means a lot.”
