Retirement Speech

Sean Payton: Retirement Speech| Why Did Retire| Where is Going

Sean Payton took his time this week to come to his retirement decision, and he also spent most of his time explaining it.

The Saints coach spoke to the media for 92 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, thanking King Cake, sharing his biggest regrets and much more in an elaborate press conference that marks the end of a coaching era.

The coach said he has no intention of coaching anywhere in 2022, but has not spoken to any media outlets about potential employment, despite what recent reports may have indicated. Whatever the future holds for Peyton, his run ends with the Saints having a final record of 152-89, nine playoff appearances, a Super Bowl title, and some of the most tortured offenses of all time.

Why Did Retire

Peyton is leaving the Saints on a somewhat low note: New Orleans is expected to deal with serious salary cap issues this offseason (the Saints are currently sitting on a salary cap of $74 million) and the quarterback has no clear solution.

According to reports, Dennis Allen is the current club house leader to become the next Saints head coach.

In 15 years in New Orleans, the teams led by Peyton are 152–89 in the playoffs with a 9–8 record. With a win in Super Bowl 44, the Saints have made the playoffs in nine seasons under Peyton. He also won seven NFC South titles.

Where is Going

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton announced he was stepping away from coaching in a news conference Tuesday.

Peyton addressed media rumors that he was taking a job in broadcasting, or another head coaching job. He refrained from labeling his move retirement or his decision at all.

“I don’t know what’s next,” Peyton said. “My heart isn’t in coaching right now. It’s not at all.” Peyton opened his news conference by thanking his team, his general manager Mickey Loomis, and Saints owner Gail Benson.

He channeled his inner “Ted Lasso”, offering him and members of the media the “Biscuit” King Cake.
