Gary Dajon Trent Jr. (born January 18, 1999) is an American professional basketball player for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils. As a high school senior, Trent was selected as a McDonald’s All-American.

Trade

The Toronto Raptors were expected to take a step forward from Gary Trent Jr. in 2021, and have rewarded their faith in him by putting together the best season ever of his career. Trent has evolved from an aggressive-minded guard with a sweet shooting stroke to a completely two-pronged presence.

As good as Norman Powell was during his days with the Raptors, Masai Ujiri was unwilling to spend nearly $100 million over five years to secure his services. The Portland Trail Blazers made a win-now move by trading Trent to Toronto in exchange for Powell and signing a long-term contract.

Powell ended up in Toronto as a result of one of the most one-sided trades in recent NBA history. The Bucks decided to bring Gervais Vasquez to Milwaukee during their split from Powell and the pick that would later become the Ozzy Annobi. Toronto was declared the winner of the deal long ago, but Trent is making the look worse for Milwaukee.

Contract

The contract would pay Trent an average of $18 million per season.

Toronto made a qualifying offer this summer, making Trent a restricted free agent. He could have turned elsewhere to sign an offer letter, but the former second-round pick decided to stay home with the Raptors again.

Trent, who came from the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a Norman Powell trade, scored a career-high 15.3 points, shooting 38.5% from the three-point range.
