Christopher Michael Beard (born February 18, 1973) is an American basketball coach who is the men’s basketball coach at the University of Texas at Austin. He previously coached at Texas Tech, Little Rock, Angelo State and McMurray. Beard graduated from high school at McCullough High School in Woodlands, Texas. He was a manager in Texas under Longhorn’s former coach Tom Penders, who graduated in 1995 with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology. He received his Masters in Education from Abilene Christian University where he served as a graduate assistant in 1998.

Beard’s former assistant Mark Adams has picked up where he left off and leads a more gritty and defensively backed Red Raider team. Asked if the two teams were mirror images of each other, Beard said, “I think it’s an accurate assessment.”
Both Horn and Red Raider have similar overall and conference records. Both top-10 defensive per kenpom, and both rank outside the offensive top-40 (Texas is currently ranked 44th and Tek is ranked 58th).
UTEP and Fresno State transfer Bryson Williams leads the team with 13.5 points per game, an efficient 54 percent off the floor and three to 46 percent shooting.
“[Bryson] is clearly a guy who can play across the floor,” Beard said about 6’8″ forward. “I think that’s because of his ability to shoot the ball in front of the basket. Have a chance to play in the NBA and then he’s loaded down the basket.”
Williams, who played for Fresno State and Texas assistant Rodney Terry at UTEP, dropped 33 on the Kansas Jayhawks in his double-overtime loss at the Fog. The Teck opened conference play with a 51–47 loss to Iowa State, but returned with wins over No. 6 Kansas and No. 1 Baylor in Waco.

Former Texas Tech coach Chris Beard received a hostile welcome from Red Raiders fans on Tuesday night as he returned to the United Supermarket Arena for the first time since leaving for Texas after the 2020-21 season. Boos rained down from the sold out crowd as Beard walked the court, and the intensity never diminished as the No. 14 Raiders overcame Beard’s No. 23 Longhorns 77–64 in a crucial Big 12 showdown.
The hostility that escalated the game was such that Beard surrounded law enforcement Tuesday night, but police couldn’t protect Texas from the physicality of Texas Tech. The Red Raiders improved to 17-5 (6-3 Big 12) under Beard’s replacement Mark Adams, who was promoted from within after Beard’s departure.
Salary
At Texas Tech, Beard led the Red Raiders to a national championship game, a mark the Texas men never reached. For that, Beard was well compensated with a salary of over $5 million per year, according to the USA Today database. For comparison, Shaka Smart was paid $3.4 million last season.
Per his contract with the Red Raiders, Texas must pay Tech a $4 million buyout payment as Beard is moving to another school within the state.
Where did go to college
After serving as a student manager and student assistant in Texas for Tom Penders and graduate assistant at Avatar Word and Abilene Christian, Beard was an assistant coach in North Texas from 1997–1999.
From there, Beard was appointed head coach at Fort Scott Community College, where he coached the team to a 19–12 record and its first winning season in 8 years.[2] In 2000, he was hired by the Seminoles. Was appointed as head coach in State College. In his one year he went 25-6 and finished 14th in the country.
After that season, Beard was hired as an assistant and later associate head coach at Texas Tech, working under the famed Bob Knight. During their time at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders traveled to the NIT Final Four as well as participated in four NCAA Tournaments. Chris Beard spent 10 years coaching at Texas Tech under Bob Knight and his son Pat Knight, often citing the influence of the two men as a key to success.
