Kyle Michael Shanahan[1] (born December 14, 1979) is an American football coach, who is the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He previously served as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and Houston Texans. With the Falcons in 2016, he coordinated an offense that scored the league points and helped the team reach Super Bowl LI. Shanahan was appointed as the head coach by the 49ers in 2017, which led to an appearance in Super Bowl LIV.

Kyle Shanahan and Matt LaFleur last met over a postgame handshake after the Green Bay Packers’ Week 3 win at Levi’s Stadium. The 49ers coach gave an icy greeting to his colleague, prompting speculation of a relationship on the rocks.
Before Saturday’s divisional round rematch at Lambeau Field, Shanahan ruled out any ill-will towards LaFleur, noting that he would lose the game to Aaron Rodgers to retake the lead on a 37-second field goal drive. Disappointed to be allowed.
“Matt is my guy. Matt and I are totally cool,” Shanahan said via the team’s official transcript. “I was pissed after that game because of how that game ended. It was a tough one. It took a while to finish, but we’re good. I talk to Matt a lot. He’s done one hell of a job over the years.” I’m really happy for him, but it stops this week.”
The cold handshake, coupled with off-season chatter that the two coaches were upset by reports of the Niners’ brief call about availability to get Rodgers in a trade, fueled the belief that their relationship wasn’t great.
Shanahan and LaFleur worked on the coaching staff with dating back to Houston in 2008, when Kyle was the offensive coordinator and Matt was an offensive assistant who was just breaking into the NFL. Lafleur then followed Shaney for four seasons (2010–2013) and Atlanta for two years (2015–2016) as quarterback coach. Since then their paths have parted ways.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and Packers head coach Matt LaFleur know each other well. LaFleur coached with Shanahan in Houston, Washington, and Atlanta. His brief, seemingly cold hand after Green Bay’s Week 3 victory over San Francisco seemed a bit awkward.
Shanahan and LaFleur met in midfield, but the 49ers head coach barely slowed down to shake hands with the opposing coach before heading straight into the locker room. This came after Mike Silver’s report emerged that there was tension between the two coaches following Packers QB Aaron Rodgers’ off-season pursuit of the 49ers.
On Monday, Shanahan played down any friction between the two coaches and blamed short handshakes for the 49ers’ hard loss.

“Mat’s my man,” Shanahan said Monday in a conference call with Bay Area reporters. “Matt and I are totally cool.”
It did not look like this on September 26, when Shanahan blew LaFleur on the field after Mason Crosby’s 51-yard field goal gave Green Bay a 30–28 win over the 49ers.
The 49ers took the lead with only 37 seconds to play off fullback Kyle Juszcic on Jimmy Garoppolo’s 12-yard touchdown pass. But Aaron Rodgers took the Packers 42 yards down the field to set up the winning points.
“I was angry after that game because of how the game ended,” Shanahan said. “He was the tough one. It took a while to get over. But we’re good. I talk to Matt a lot. (He’s) done a great job this year – was really happy for him but he got laid off this week .

Kyle Shanahan was named as the 20th head coach of the San Francisco 49ers on February 6, 2017. Shanahan signed a multi-year contract extension with the 49ers on June 15, 2020.
In 2019, he was named Coach of the Year by The Sporting News and NFC Coach of the Year by the Committee of 101, leading the 49ers to a 13-3 regular season record, the NFC West Division title and an appearance in Super Bowl LIV Was. San Francisco’s nine-win improvement from 2018 to 2019 was the biggest win improvement from one season to the next in franchise history. The 49ers became one of three teams to finish a season 4–12 or worse since the NFL switched to the 12-team playoff format in 1990, followed by the next season (1999 St. Louis Rams).
