Glenn Alfred Beckert (October 12, 1940 – April 12, 2020) was an American professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a second baseman for the Chicago Cubs for nine seasons, from 1965 to 1973, before ending his career with the San Diego Padres in 1975. He was a four-time All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner.

Playing alongside Hall of Famers Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, and Ferguson Jenkins, Baker won the Gold Glove in 1968 and made four straight All-Star teams for Chicago since 1969. He died on 12 April in Florida at the age of 79. Beckert played for the Chicago Cubs (1965–73) and the San Diego Padres (1974–75).

Unless you’re from Chicago or haven’t spent a lot of time among Cubs fans of a certain age, it can be hard to understand how respected the 1969 Cubs team is. For decades, when it came to Cubs baseball, that team was the only one worth noting until at least the 1984 squad. But anyone who played on that ’69 team has achieved legend status among Cubs fans, not just Hall of Famers like Banks, Williams, Santo or Jenkins. Anyone from Randy Hundley to Glenn Beckert to Paul Popovich will enjoy a huge crowd of autograph seekers at the Cubs convention. While that team was ahead of my time, I have heard so much about them that I can appreciate the impression they have made on the city.

“After his playing days ended, Glenn was a familiar sight at Wrigley Field and many Cubs conventions, and he always had a fond memory of sharing his time on the field with his beloved teammates. Glenn Baker was born on 12 October 1940 in Pittsburgh. His first home run – well, his first – came when Perry Adams was playing with the Yankees of the Little League. He was 11 at the time, and the news made local newspapers. He was regularly selected to appear on youth All-Star teams. Before he signed a professional contract, he had played on the amateur All-Star teams at Forbes Field and Yankee Stadium.

After excelling at Perry High School in Pittsburgh and Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., Baker was an in-demand prospect. By his senior year of college, he had a lifetime collegiate average of .487 and was a three-time member of the All-President Athletic Conference infield. In the summer of 1961 the Yankees offered him a bonus contract. He did not accept it, but his father had accepted travel and living expenses from the team for the trials. Because money changed hands, Bakkert was disqualified from college sports in December of 1961. The ruling cost Baker his role at shortstop on the Allegheny college basketball team as well as on a baseball tee.
