Juwan Howard was unwilling to sacrifice the long-term health of his players for a better chance of winning Friday’s game. Michigan’s premier men’s basketball coach decided to start the team’s lead scorer and rebounder Hunter Dickinson as well as major reserve Brandon Johns Jr., in a crucial matchup in Illinois. Both the players recently contracted COVID-19 and felt the effects. Neither had exercised, at least not regularly, in the past week or so. Johns, a senior, did not travel to Michigan’s previous game, Jan. 4, at Rutgers. Dickinson, a sophomore, said he tested negative for COVID three times after the game, as the team returned from UCF on 31 December.

Michigan
Michigan, who had been fit and started last week and never had enough players for five-a-five drills, already faced an uphill challenge against a red-hot Illini team that went undefeated in Big Ten play. and has won 10 of its last 11 matches. Playing without Dickinson’s best player and aggressive focal point makes Friday’s game even more dangerous. Dickinson told reporters at Big Ten Media Day in October that after his poor performance in a one-sided loss to the Illini last March, he had a scheduled date round with Illinois. The matchup against Illinois center Kofi Cockburn, who averages 22 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, was billed as the fight for two of the league’s best centers. Cockburn enters the game with eight consecutive double-doubles. Without Dickinson and Johns, Wolverine would be forced to defend Cockburn with only one scholarship older man: freshman Moussa Diabet. The only other center walk-on on the roster is Jaron Folds.
