Fights:
As healthy as they have been all season, the Toronto Maple Leafs have decided that winger Nick Ritchie is the odd man out, placing him on waivers Thursday. The intent is to stash the high(ish)-earning winger on the taxi squad in the event that he clears, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.
Toronto will accrue just over $1 million in cap space if successful with the move.
Hockey db:
Selected by the Anaheim Ducks with the No. 10 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, Nick Ritchie signed an entry-level contract with the Ducks on Aug. 2, 2014, and turned pro after playing one more season in the Ontario Hockey League with Peterborough and Sault Ste. Marie.
In 2015-16, Ritchie put up 30 points (16 goals, 14 assists) in 38 games with San Diego of the American Hockey League to earn a midseason call-up by Anaheim, where he had four points (two goals, two assists) in 33 games.
Toronto Maple Leafs:
It was bound to happen. The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed left winger Nick Ritchie, who carries a cap hit of $2.5 million for this season and next, on waivers today. Ritchie has one goal and eight points in 30 games this season.
He started the season with the opportunity of a lifetime next to Matthews and Marner, but he’s slowly and painfully creeped his way down the lineup into the 13th forward spot.
