Terms on a contract extension for the Portland Trail Blazers and guard Anferney Simmons are not expected before Monday’s deadline.

According to Jason Quick of The Athletic, the Blazers want to see “a bigger, more consistent body of work” from Simmons before making a long-term commitment.

Quick also noted that Simmons believes he can increase his value by playing under new Blazers head coach Chancey Billups during the 2021–22 season.

Simmons, 22, will earn $3.9 million in the final year of his rookie contract before becoming a free agent next season.

If the Blazers extend a qualifying offer of $5.7 million, Simmons will become a restricted free agent, meaning Portland will have the right to match any offer made to him by another team.

It was near midnight when Anferney Simmons and his father, Charles, arrived at the Portland Trail Blazers’ practice facility in Tualatin on December 18.

Simmons was just hours away from a poor performance against the Golden State Warriors at the Moda Center. The 20-year-old had picked up four fouls and for the first and only time this season failed to score in a game, going 0 for 5 in his 20 minutes on the floor.

But late at night inside the empty gym in Tualatin, the game had already faded into a distant memory. Simmons clearly ditched the three-pointers as his father offered encouragement and advice, as he had done several times before.

“We’re always at the gym together,” Simmons said. “He’s the first person to ever hire me and he knows my game, so it’s easy to talk to him about it.”

The Portland Trailblazers defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 136-131, in what could be considered the most thrilling performance in the NBA’s Monday slate. Anferney Simmons scored a career-high 43 points and made seven assists, dedicating the performance to his recently passed grandfather. Simmons shot 9-16 from deep, making half of Portland’s 18 three-pointers on his own.

So far, the Blazers point guard is having a breakout season, posting career-high numbers across the board. Simmons is shooting 39.0 percent from the three-point line, while scoring a career-high 12.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Simmons is coming along as an X-factor for the Blazers, displaying dynamic offensive skills and an iso-threat glow with the ball.
