Contract

The new deal has an annual salary-cap hit of $6.5 million, which would make Gallagher the highest-paid forward on the team, topping Jonathan Drouin and newcomer Josh Anderson, who have $5.5 million pay-cap hits.

Gallagher has one season remaining on his current six-year, US$22.5 million contract with a $3.75 million pay-cap hit, and could become an unrestricted free agent after next season.

With the new deal, Gallagher is now under contract through the 2026-27 season.

On Tuesday, TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBron tweeted that contract talks between Canadiens GM Mark Bergevin and Gallagher’s agent Gerry Johansson had broken down and they “apparently haven’t gone very well so far.”

This probably intensified negotiations, with the fact that Gallagher’s contract status quickly became the talk of the town with Montreal hockey fans, particularly on sports radio shows calling with fans and taking sides in contract negotiations. While debating how much he was worth and in what period.

What happened to

Brendan Gallagher was missing from the Montreal Canadiens’ bench when the team returned from second time versus the Carolina Hurricanes. The team has announced that it will not return to the sport.

Just before the match began, it was revealed that Jonathan Drouin was unable to deal with a non-COVID illness. It’s possible that Gallagher is experiencing similar symptoms, but we’ll have to wait for further word on his condition.

The Canadiens have one game left on this road trip before a long break from their slate of rescheduled games. They will need to completely nail down their depth to get the roster together for Saturday afternoon’s game in Florida.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bergevin announced that he has signed Allen for a two-year contract extension of US$5.75 million with a $2.875 million pay-cap hit that will kick off for the 2021-22 season.
Bergevin clearly did not want Gallagher’s contract negotiations to become a distraction or cast a shadow over the other work he had done as the Canadiens were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Philadelphia Flyers. The new contract looks good on both sides.

Now all the attention of the Canadiens and their fans will be on next season – whenever it can begin with the second wave of COVID-19 now hitting North America.

Gallagher and Bergevin will speak to the media in separate video conferences on Thursday afternoon.
