John Earl Madden was an American football coach and sportscaster. He was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League for ten seasons, and helmed them to a championship in Super Bowl XI.
John Madden: Was married| Why did quit coaching| where did go to college
Was married:
Personal life. Madden met his wife, Virginia Fields, in a bar in Pismo Beach, California, marrying on December 26, 1959. They lived in Pleasanton, California, and had two sons, Joseph and Michael.
John Madden’s wife, Virginia Madden, is the axis around which the Madden household rotates. She takes care of all the essential things of John and the members of the Madden family. Besides several antiques, Virginia has kept John’s one of the crucial gifts from his friends, a highway YIELD sign securely. Ted Hendricks, the three-time-All-America linebacker, gifted it to John while he retired.
Why did quit coaching:
Madden’s tenure with the Raiders ended abruptly after the 1978 season, when he retired from coaching because of a bleeding ulcer and a strained relationship with his sons. He finished with a record of 103-32-7.
Madden retired from coaching the Oakland Raiders in 1979, at age 42 and with a Super Bowl victory to his credit, but he turned the second act of his life into an encore, a Rabelaisian emissary sent from the corner bar to demystify the mysteries of football for the common fan and, in the process, revolutionize sports.
Where did go to College:
The NFL lost one of its biggest legends Tuesday with the unexpected passing of John Madden, 85, the retired Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster. But Madden’s legacy will live on. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said it best, in remembrance, on Tuesday: John Madden was football — an icon of the sport, a mentor of the game, a voice for generations.
Born in Minnesota and raised in California, Madden starred in high school football before playing offensive and defensive line at the College of San Mateo. He eventually got a scholarship from Oregon alongside friend and future USC and Rams coach John Robinson, bounced to Grays Harbor College after a knee injury resulted in a redshirt season, then finally landed with Cal Poly, where he earned all-conference honors as an offensive tackle.
