Powell attended IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. As a senior, he averaged 23.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.3 blocks per game. Considered a five-star recruit by Rivals.com, Powell was listed as the No. 8 power forward and the No. 25 player in the nation in 2010.

Injury
The Clippers were in town on a Tuesday night in January 2020. There were three minutes left in the first quarter when Powell caught the ball on the right wing and tried to take off toward the basket. His right leg popped and he crumbled to the floor.
Siblings
It is not clear whether Dwight Powell’s parents were ever married or whether they actually just split up when he was very young. His mother, Jacqueline Weir, was a West Indian Island-born banker in Boston, while his father, Harlan Powell, is a white Canadian living in Toronto.
Jacqueline Weir was primarily responsible for her son’s education. When she grew up, she had no formal education but was able to get a good education through night school before she was able to fight for the heights she reached. Her struggles led her to instill in her son the value of an academic, whom she promised would meet the requirements for a degree before following his dreams of playing professional basketball.
Mrs. Weir died of breast cancer on September 13, 2013, in a hospital in Melrose, Massachusetts. His teammates and coaches from Stanford University flew to Boston in particular to attend her funeral.

Dwight Harlan Powell was born as the son of Jacqueline Weir and Harlan Powell on July 20, 1991, in Toronto, Canada, where he also grew up. From a very young age, Powell was an outstanding athlete among his peers, although his mother was more concerned about his education.
He attended Earl Haid Secondary School, known as one of the strongest academic public schools in the country, but the sports department was lacking. His mother understood that a sports scholarship gave her son a better chance of attending an Ivy League university, so the family pressed for him to attend the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, which had previously offered him a scholarship and was known as an elite sports school.
Defense
As a freshman at Stanford University in 2010–11, Powell earned Pac-10 All-Freshman Team honors. He started in 26 of 31 games, averaging 8.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. As a sophomore in 2011–12, the Cardinal won the NIT championship, and Powell earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection. He started in 11 of 35 games, logging an average of 5.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
As a junior in 2012–13, Powell earned second-team NABC All-District, first-team All-Pac-12, and Pac-12 All-Academic second-team honors. He was also named the Pac-12 Most Improved Player of the Year. Powell started in all 34 games, averaging 14.9 points to go with 8.4 rebounds per game.
As a senior in 2013–14, Powell earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors for the second straight year and was named to the NCAA All-South Regional Team. He was also named the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection. Powell started in all 36 games, putting up an average of 14.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
