Before enrolling in Mississippi State, Simmons was involved in a fight between his sister, her mother, and another woman.
Video of the incident showed Simmons, a senior in Knoxby County, Mississippi, hitting the woman several times, then walking away.
Simmons was found guilty of malicious mischief. He pleaded not to resist the simple assault and paid the fine and compensation for the woman’s medical bills.
Simmons was suspended by Mississippi State for the team’s 2016 season opener.
“I’m not perfect,” Simmons said on a conference call Thursday night. “I made a mistake. I own it. I wasn’t raised like this, to hit a woman. I’m sorry. Grateful to have the opportunity, a fresh start in college.”

Simmons began his rookie season on the non-football injury list in February 2019 due to a serious knee injury sustained during training. He missed the first six games of the season, but was added to the 53-man roster in Week 7. He played a total of nine games (three starts) during the regular season and all three games in the playoffs. Mississippi State Product enjoyed a strong second campaign for the Titans in 2020, when he finished second at the club with three sacks and 20 quarterback pressure and tied for the NFL lead with three defensive fumbles.
