Tiger Woods will return to competitive golf with his 12-year-old son Charlie at the PNC Championship next week.
Last week the 15-time major champion admitted that his full-time return to professional sport is unlikely after he suffered a serious leg injury following a car accident in February this year. However, he said he would “pick a few events a year and … play around that”.
Woods sustained open fractures to the tibia and fibula in his right leg in the accident, saying the amputation was a very real possibility.
The PNC Championship is a tournament in which the leading champions play against a family member. Tiger and Charlie played together in the tournament last year.
“While it’s been a long and challenging year, I’m so excited to end it by competing in the PNC Championship with my son Charlie,” Woods tweeted. “I’m playing as a father and couldn’t be more excited and proud.”
IMG’s Alistair Johnson, executive chairman of the PNC Championships, said he looked forward to welcoming the Woods family to the event. “We have been in touch with Tiger and his team for some time and are delighted that they have now decided to return to competitive golf at the PNC Championship,” he added.

Tiger Woods met both of his goals at the PNC Championship this weekend – having fun with his son Charlie, and managing to play the scramble format of the event without bogging down.
But along the way, the old competitive fire intensified as Woods not only played remarkably well – with good help from his 12-year-old son – but also got into contention with a force of 11 consecutive birdies.
The streak ended on the par-5 18th hole – when – knowing they needed an eagle to have any chance of victory – both Tiger and Charlie chipped the hole and were unable to make the put.
John Daly and his son, John Daly II, captured the 36-hole contest on Sunday, with a last-round 57 to clip Woods’ team by 2 shots. They finished at 27 under for the tournament, breaking the tournament mark set by Davis Love III and his son three years earlier by 1 stroke.
