Blackhawks winger Jujhar Khaira had to be pulled out of the ice in the second period on Tuesday night after being out cold from a heavy hit by defenseman Jacob Trouba in Rangers’ 6-2 win at United Center.

The night took a turn when Trouba stoned Khaira, who had turned her head down on the play and crashed on the ice. Several trainers took care of Khaira before he was taken on a stretcher.

Khaira was alert, as he raised his hand to the crowd on his way through the snow. The Blackhawks announced that Khaira was taken by ambulance to Northwestern Hospital for further testing.

Trouba was not made available after the game, but head coach Gerard Gallant said he thought it was a clean hit and admitted it was an unfortunate situation.

Suspension

Blackhawks forward Jujhar Khaira had a frightening sight on Tuesday night in the middle of the snow during the second period after New York Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba hit massive open ice.

It all started when Khaira attempted to play a pass into his skates, lost control of the puck, and it was at the end of a brutal open ice hit.

Khaira knocked before hitting the snow.

The Blackhawks’ training staff immediately ordered a stretcher and Khaira was taken to a local hospital.

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toes said, “This was a guy who was very shaken, not going to lie to you, so glad to hear he’s doing fine.” “It sucks that happens sometimes.”

Trouba was not punished for the hit. At normal speed and from afar, it looked like Trouba hit Khaira in the chest, but second, slow replays it looked like his hand hit Khaira’s face. The NHL Department of Player Safety will undoubtedly review this for possible discipline.

Later Riley Stillman of Chicago fought Trouba in response to the play.

After the game, Blackhawks head coach Derek King said Khaira was getting up and talking.

“I think he wants to get back on the ice,” said King. “He has already done some tests as far as the doctor told me, but he has some more tests to be done. So we won’t know the extent of the injury until after these tests.”

Rangers fans were thrilled when the club acquired the big right-shooting defenseman from the Winnipeg Jets for what looked like a robbery in June 2019, defender Neil Pionak and their first-round pick of the Jets, 20th overall. (Which Rangers had received in the trade deadline swap for center Kevin Hayes). Jacob Trouba was expected to be the top-pair anchor the Rangers craved for so long, increasing his physicality and apparently offensive play on a nightly basis.

A month after his takeover, Rangers signed their direct No. 1 defenseman, a restricted free agent, to a seven-year, $56 million contract.
