Interception

Daniel Jones: Interception| Fantasy| Fumbles| Concussion

One of the biggest knocks against New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones during his first three seasons in the NFL has been his ability to protect the football.

An absolutely awful interception during Monday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won’t help erase that narrative.

Trailing by 14 in the third quarter, Jones took a snap on second-and-eight and rolled out to his right. He quickly came under pressure and haphazardly flung the ball back over the other side of the field, where Bucs defensive lineman Steve McLendon easily made an interception

Fantasy

The wheels are coming off for Jones. Over the Giants’ first four games of the season, he threw four TD passes and one interception, averaging 296.0 passing yards per game. In the six games since, Jones has thrown four TD passes and six interceptions, averaging 173.7 passing yards a game. Jones hasn’t been able to salvage any fantasy value with his legs. He hasn’t run for a touchdown since Week 2, and he’s averaged 13.3 rushing yards over his last six games. Will the firing of Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett this week help matters at all? Let’s just say we’d be more optimistic if Garrett’s replacement was someone other than former Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens. Jones is a low-end QB2 this week against the Eagles.

Fumbles

The Daniel Jones Experience has been quite the ride since he’s entered the league in 2019. After all, any time you share a bit of history with Ryan Leaf, that makes for some fun water cooler talk.

While the Duke product has shown flashes of high-ceiling ability, he’s also done a lot to make fans and analysts question whether or not he can be a bona fide franchise passer in Year 3. While there are red flags about his pocket presence and awareness , the most foreboding is Jones’ ability to throw the ball extremely well — to defensive players.

There have been no shortage of good reasons for Jones’ overall discomfort as passer; He’s had a porous offensive line, he’s had a questionable supporting cast and the coaching situation around him hasn’t been the most inspiring. Through all that, though, Jones has turned the ball over well over once per game on average. That’s a big yikes.

Concussion

Daniel Jones is on track to play against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

New York Giants coach Joe Judge told reporters Friday that Jones was a full participant in practice, and it “appears” that the QB will be able to play in Week 5 following an injury. Jones was officially dropped from the injury report later on Friday.

  1. Jones had to be fully cleared by an independent neurologist for the suit against the rams.

Jones suffered an injury on a QB run just before halftime in the Giants’ 44-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The QB have enjoyed a decent start to the 2021 season, with completion percentages (64.3), passing yards (256.4), rushing yards (39.4), passer ratings (95.6) and giveaways per game (0.4) through five weeks. Best writing career.

With Saxon Barkley out this week, having Jones in the lineup is crucial to the Big Blue’s chances of pulling off an upset against the 4-1 Rams.

New York receiver Sterling Shepard will also be back in the lineup, as he was dropped with an injury report. Receivers Darius Slayton (hamstrings) and Kadarius Tony (ankles) and offensive lineman Andrew Thomas (legs) are suspects, while Barkley and receiver Kenny Golladay (knee) will not play.
